Diabetes Educator and Registered Dietician Kristine Bihun, RDN, CDE, offers these benefits to eating figs, a seasonal fruit, but available throughout the year in dried form:
1) Can help to remove kidney stones;
2) High in potassium, which can help to reduce insulin and control diabetes;
3) Ample calcium to strengthen bones; 4) Sufficient dietary fiber to help reduce body weight . . .
BUT, portion is key! . . .
1 large fig (2 ounces by weight) is one portion. So eating more increases your calories and can cause weight gain.
